My Story

How did I become Permacultureanna?

I lived in London and have had three careers spanning informal education, alternative health, and now permaculture. To me, it’s all the same: alternative holistic thinking. I was first introduced to forest gardening in 1996, but it wasn’t until 2011 - when I completed a full Permaculture Design Course on a farm in Wales - that I really began to put it into practice.

Already a trained RHS gardener, I had never used chemicals and had always been fascinated by ecosystems rather than just gardens. After my course, I worked as a community gardener across North London, designing gardens, planting forest gardens, and teaching food growing to a wide range of groups — schools, community centres, housing estates, and more.

I took permaculture further by studying for my Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design, which I completed in 2016 — the same year I moved to Hastings and had the wonderful opportunity to buy a field and put everything I’d learned into practice.

Since then, I’ve taught many short courses, particularly in forest gardening, which eventually led to my book, The Forager’s Garden (Permanent Publications, 2021). My deep passion has always been to share an easier, sustainable way to grow food — creating perennial systems that feed communities while restoring soils and ecosystems.

Today, my farm is a biodiversity hotspot. I use guild planting in the orchard, which now supports the most insects on the site and even great crested newts. I regenerate soils through mulching and organic methods. For me, permaculture works — I’m a scientist and a practitioner, experimenting with these systems for years and sharing ways to live on the planet while repairing, rather than damaging, our environment.

When I look out and see the growing network of permaculture projects, it gives me great hope — and it is this hope that I aim to share.

Consultation

I give consultations about- gardens, allotments, community gardens, land projects and small farms, other types of community project or sustainable business.

In-Person Consultations (Local)
£70.00

Within a 5 mile radius of Hastings (contact me directly for further afield). During a consultation I would visit your project space and cast my horticultural and permaculture eye over it to see what initially comes up, in order to make it a success.

Online Consultations

A 40 minute online consultation, and a follow up e-mail of some suggestions and sign posting that would be helpful to your project. Useful at the beginning of a project or if you have become stuck and would appreciate some direction and different ideas.

The Forager's Garden

This is a complete guide to growing an edible sanctuary where wildflowers and local species thrive, alongside lots of food that you can go out and gather. These gardens are long-term, low maintenance and vibrant spaces that help restore the Nature around us.

I love your book, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the world. You make the ideas of forest gardening and permaculture really accessible for people. I bought a paper copy (as well as digital) and it’s going round the workshop participants. You’re a big inspiration for me.

The book really sets out how to grow lots of food with minimal work in a way that has ecological integrity.... a must read.

'I finished the book last night. We share the same passion and my garden design along these lines is being created as I write. Your passion shines through in the book, so I am certain you will encourage many more to consider adding aspects of this to their own garden.
K Ford

This is such a useful book for anyone who is interested in creating a low maintenance edible garden, even in a small space. It breaks the principles down really simply, everything is easy to follow and feels achievable, even for a novice gardener and those on low budgets, whether it's your own garden or a community space. I also really liked how the practical advice is linked to the bigger picture around food security and community building. It has definitely inspired me and given me the confidence to try this approach in my own small garden!
